If you are visiting Krabi on the weekend, you should consider the Krabi Town Walking Street, an absolute must-see on your itinerary.
Krabi Province, Krabi Municipality, Office of Commercial Affairs Krabi and Krabi Chamber of Commerce organize this local event where local products, food, cultural entertainment and activities for children all come to offer you a visual stimulation unlike any other. This place offers a fascinating insight into local culture and is also a veritable treasure for enthusiastic shoppers. There is a lovely atmosphere and prices are very low. You’ll have the chance to buy local souvenirs, taste local delicacies, buy handmade flower soap, fold up pandanus leaf into flowers, listen to traditional Thai music performed by school children and even experience a mini local cultural performance. There are lamps handmade from coconut shells, Malay grazed sarongs, colourful batik clothing, various clothes, shoes and fashion accessories all at reasonable prices.
Krabi walking street offers over 70 Thai food stalls such as mixed rice with fresh Thai herbs and topped with “Boodoo”, boiled rice with ten dishes such as small fish, salad eggs and fried radish with eggs. You can of course have the famous ‘pad thai’ or a mushroom salad with tom yum dressing. Other foods from various parts of Thailand such as Som Tam served with rice noodles, spicy young boiled bamboo shoot salad and a large choice of desserts and seasonal fruits.
Many Hotels are now offering an excursion to the ‘walking street’ market in Krabi town as part of an evening City Tour, which costs around 350 baht per person. You can also book your visit in advance by simply taking the local bus or Songthaew (white pickup trucks that you see travelers hanging off the backs of) and visit this market independently. The bus stops right outside the market.
