Mangos are known worldwide as one of quintessential tropical fruits and well deserve this distinction as they are found nearly everywhere where the temperature rarely drops below 25°C (77°F). From Thailand to Nicaragua and Congo to Mexico, these tasty fruits can be found.

The origin of the mango is in South East Asia, but since the spice trade, it has found many new homes worldwide.

Such a beloved specimen, the mango is the national fruit of India, Pakistan, and The Philippine Islands, and the mango tree is the national tree of Bangladesh!

The Mango has so many uses. Fresh mangoes can be peeled and eaten as they are, and they can be diced and served on top sweet sticky rice and sweetened coconut milk. Smaller varieties can be cut before they are ripe and served with a chilli and sugar dip. Mangoes can be chopped and blended with yogurt and ice to create a wonderful, refreshing smoothie. It can be pureed, crushed, and turned into juice. Its uses are wide and its influence is great.

If this is the first time you’ve been to Thailand and you are feeling a little parched, head out onto the road and look for a streetcar blending up fresh juices and smoothies. They can make you a fantastic mango smoothie for a great price. Plan to spend between 25-40THB per smoothie.

It’s not only the taste and variety of preparation options which make this fruit so great. The flesh is packed with a range of vitamins and minerals, and contains higher concentrations of Vitamin B9 (Folate), Vitamin C, Potassium, Phosphorus and Calcium.

So head out and get yourself a healthy mango smoothie or a tasty dessert of mango atop sticky rice and sweetened coconut milk.
