Ao Nam Mao’s outdoor aquarium
Krabi Fisheries Department in Ao Nam Mao has recently re-opened the aquarium after an expensive refurbishment program. It now has a well laid out and interesting walkway through the aquarium for visitors to view the various marine animals that the Fisheries Department is breeding.
The Thai government’s Coastal Resource management unit - the Marine Conservation Centre - in Ao Nam Mao, about 5 km from Ao Nang on the way to the Fossil Shell, reopened its doors in April this year for the first time after a complete renovation costing 8.5 million Baht (government grant).A funny Clown Fish now graces the entrance of the Marine Conservation Centre, so you can't miss it...
If you are staying in Krabi make sure to include it in your list of ‘must see attractions’... Visitors can walk along the 750 meters walkways over the water and view the rare species in separated pools below. Visitors can see leopard sharks, black tip reef sharks, Hawksbill turtles, giant groupers, and different species of angel fish, anemone fish, clown fish, seahorses, barramundi cod and other endangered species. The entrance fee is 20 Baht.
The centre breeds endangered species in large salt water lakes next to the coast, for research and conservation; most fish are eventually released back into the sea in order to boost the local populations. There is also an information booth displaying information about the marine environment.
The training to educate Thai people about conservation of coastal habitats is sponsored by 'Coastal Habitats and Resource Management' (CHARM) of the European Union program.
