Krabi's mythology

Ammartpanichnukul School, which is to celebrate its 100 years anniversary, is one of the top schools in Krabi Province and the children compete quite vigorously to attend. Their EP language program is an enhanced English program. Many of the student classes are taught only in English, including Science and Physical Education. The students are very bright and work hard; EP is a pilot program which has shown such good results that they will be expanding it next year.

There is some surmise about the name of Krabi. Maybe it means 'sword' because the legend tells that people have found an old sword while digging before they started to build the city, so now a sword is the province's symbol. Krabi is known as the oldest community in Thailand. People have discovered lots of old material from the Stone Age and big human skulls scattered everywhere and lots of paintings on cave walls. The most paintings on cave walls are in Phi Hua To Mountain. The paintings in this cave are different than other paintings that have been found in Thailand…

There are paintings that are human and animals like birds, fish, octopi, crocodiles, hedgehogs and shrimps, and there are also paintings about everyday equipment like nets and boats. There are 163 pictorials in total; what's strange about them is that every human painting has an eagle or a bird on their left side. Scientists believe that these paintings aren't for showing beauty but for telling stories.

Krabi has many legends. A famous one is the Legend of Kao Kanab Nam; everyone who has visited Krabi must have seen the two strange looking mountain ranges called Kao Kanab Nam. The legend goes like this: once upon a time there was a small city; the Governor of that city had a beautiful daughter so all men fell in love with her. One day two of them were having a fight; one of them was human and the other was a giant. They were fighting until death, and the winner would have the chance to marry the beautiful woman. Both of them died though. The giant’s corpse became a mountain; the human’s sword was blown away and dropped somewhere, in a place called Ban Krabi Noi. The giant’s sword dropped somewhere near which is called 'Ban Krabi Yai'. In time, Kao Krabi names were those of the two men's corpses.

Another famous legend is the one of Ao Pranang, or the famous beautiful beach. A long time ago there was a beautiful woman and because of her beauty lots of men in that neighborhood fell in love with her but she didn't accept anyone's love. One day she fell in love with a man from an island and they decided to get married. On the wedding day, there was a big parade but the other men didn't accept it and they felt very angry, so there was a big fight and a very loud noise. At that time a warlock was praying in a cave and the noise was annoying him so he came out of the cave and tried to stop the noise, but no one listened to him. He felt so angry he cursed them all and turned them into rocks and islands. The beautiful woman became Nang Cave and the sticky rice that was for the wedding became the shell fossil beach.
