Krabi Town wanders
Krabi is mostly visited as a stop on the way to the surrounding hot spots: Ao Nang, Railay Bay, Ao Ton Sai, Ko Phi Phi or Ko Lanta. However, a few days can be spent in this provincial capital. Krabi is situated on a relatively low and flat patch of land running along the Krabi River, which is to the east. Kanab Nam mountain is visible to the north -- two limestone rocks jutting up from the water at curious angles. Krabi attracts travellers mostly due to its location, being convenient to the airport and the main pier at Krabi passenger port. This is also where the main bus terminal is located, 3km outside of town. The Old Chaofa Pier is located off of Klong Kha Rd on the Krabi River, near the town centre, where there is a charming night market close to the promenade next to the piers. Food is good, with Muslim influences...
The town has some surprisingly-good eating altogether, including Italian restaurants like La Panza at the old pier and Viva in a small road off Maharaj, and the surrounds do have a few minor sites worth peeking at, like the dog ear’s shaped Khao Kanab Nam mountains. The town is carpeted with internet cafes and travel agents who can organize just about anything, and throughout the town there are plenty of budget to midrange hotels and guesthouses that are very reasonable. The center of things seems to rotate around the old pier, in the southern part of town, where much of the budget accommodation is located along Klongkha, Uttarakit and Chao Fa roads. Most of the main services are located along the river side of Uttarakit Road as you head south.
It is further north, along Maharat Rd, where you'll find the main shopping centre Vogue: KFC, Swensens, 7-elevens, and the downtown night market on Maharat Soi (Lane) 10 in the centre of town. This market has plenty of fresh fruit and lots of authentic cooked food. Only a few places have menus, otherwise point and enjoy.
