Tying the knot in Thailand

Krabi and the Islands of southern Thailand all add up to spell: ‘Love is in the air’.

You know the story of the ‘Birds and the Bees’. You come to southern Thailand with (or to find) that certain ‘special’ someone, your soul mate. Here, under swaying palms, surrounded by breathtaking scenery and spectacular sunsets, the scent of pheromones lingers thick in the evening air. Left un-checked, romance blossoms…

Like nesting birds, pairing couples contemplate their future. The atmosphere propels your giddy mind, and thoughts of this magical moment prompt you to consider freezing time. Love is a drug. Before you realize it, the passion of the moment has you looking into that ‘other’s’ eyes and asking that age-old question: “Will you marry me?” Sounds like another cheesy chapter from a classic movie? Wrong. This is the mood that you may feel taking over your senses when surrounded by such a beautiful exotic location as the Krabi region and its surrounding enchanted Islands.

In Thailand, it is legal for foreigners to marry either Thai citizens or other foreign nationals. The process is generally fairly straightforward. Certain paperwork is required, all of which must be translated into the Thai language and legalized according to Thai law. Marriages can be performed at a local district office known as  'amphur' or 'khet'. In order for foreigners to get married in Thailand, they must have clearance from their Embassy. In general, the Thai district offices that perform marriages require affidavits that assert the name of the foreigner, as well as personal details such as confirmed citizenship of that country, and legal freedom to marry.

A marriage in Thailand is a legal marriage pursuant to Thai law, and is generally recognized throughout the world. For individuals with trans-national issues, where one or more spouse is from a different country, Thailand is a very convenient location in which to marry. Another distinct advantage of getting married in Thailand is the variety of picturesque locations, such as world class beach resorts and stunning sceneries, where a formal or religious ceremony can be performed following the legal administrative marriage.

The Krabi region and its surrounding pristine Islands are becoming synonymous with the catch-cry of “I do” to many a love struck couple. Exotic locations such as Koh Hong, Koh Lanta, Koh Jum and Phi Phi Islands every year draw hundreds of foreign visitors seeking the perfect location to exchange their wedding vows. Hypnotic Railay Beach, with its towering limestone karst topography, golden sand and Island-dotted horizon, is another dreamy Krabi destination that oozes romance. Due to demand, companies offering complete wedding packages are in abundance. One company that is thriving in this field is ‘Krabi Spesialisten’. Managing Director Ingeborg Fallet Kristensen has spent the last three years ‘tailor-making’ that wedding moment into a dream come true, with unparalleled memories.

These moments may include an engagement aloft an elephant, saying your wedding vows on a deserted Island or maybe even an underwater wedding, with colourful tropical fish as your witnesses. A blessing by Thai monks in a temple, to many, has been an ideally treasured marital experience. Ingeborg’s familiarity with the formalities of a Thai marriage, access to qualified translators, and an understanding of the Thai legal process mean professional down to the last detail.
